Otelco Inc. Using CopperCom's CSX to Deliver VoIP, IPTV over its Network

By Patrick Barnard, TMCnet Associate Editor

Alabama-based Otelco Inc., a full-service communications provider offering telephone, cable television, DSL and long distance service, has reportedly decided to deploy CopperCom’s Converged Switching eXchange (CSX) next-generation soft switch as it gears up to deliver VoIP and other next generation services to its customers.

CopperCom CSX is an RUS listed, next generation switching system that provides Class 4, Class 5 and IP Services. CopperCom claims it is “the industry’s first true softswitch solution designed to operate with the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network and support next-generation services.”

Designed to meet the specific requirements of independent operating companies (IOC) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC), the switch comes with a complete set of features including residential CLASS and custom calling features, business group, CALEA, LNP and centrex. Consisting of two main components, the CSX media gateway and the CopperController softswitch, the system scales from 240 lines to beyond 48,000.

Otelco will use the switch to deliver next gen services to its approximately 50,000 customers in Alabama, Missouri and Maine.

“The current market is very competitive, and we wanted to be in a position to offer a unique group of services to our customers, including bundled services and next-generation services like VoIP and IPTV (News - Alert),” said Dennis Andrews, senior vice president of Otelco Inc., in a press release. “The CopperCom CSX will enable us to offer these services cost effectively and with full confidence …”
