Loquendo Adds Embedded Speech Recognition to Symbian OS

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In a bid to position their company deeper in the embedded speech technologies market, officials at one Telecom Italia (News - Alert) company, Loquendo, announced the availability of their Embedded ASR on Symbian OS, an open operating system designed for mobile devices.

For developers of multimedia apps on the OS, the new addition provides the ability to speed up response and recognition times, while maintaining a small footprint. In addition, Loquendo (News - Alert) Embedded ASR offers speech recognition technology that can handle tens of thousands of words and provides the technology needed to power solutions like voice dialing, or voice destination entry.

This is especially important as voice-enabled phones, navigation apps and MP3 players are increasing in popularity.

In addition to speech recognition capabilities, Symbian (News - Alert) OS and Loquendo Embedded TTS are also already compatible. With this latest offering, designers now have a complete set of technologies from Loquendo to support the development of speech-enabled applications for any smartphone or mobile device.

Embedded applications can make use of ASR technology to hear and understand the user’s voice command while TTS technology makes it possible for an application to speak information. This means users hands and eyes can remain free while they control and manage applications and devices and obtain necessary information.

Loquendo currently offers 26 languages with 63 voices and is continually adding to its family as it pursues reduced costs and an enhanced customer satisfaction.

Earlier this year, the company announced Dillo!, an new iPhone (News - Alert) application that leverages their embedded ASR technology to make it possible for users to say a contact or number to call and the iPhone dials the contact based on solely the voice command.
