Fieldforce Services Partners with Sensus to Promote Smart Grid in Australia

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A partnership has emerged between Australia’s Fieldforce Services and Sensus in an effort to promote Smart Grid solutions employing Sensus’ FlexNet Advanced Metering Infrastructure communications system, as well as the advanced metering systems, to the Australian market.

Fieldforce, a wholly owned subsidiary of UXC, is one of Australia’s robust providers of energy and water efficiency and conservation services for utilities, governments, corporations and households. Fieldforce will be the first provider to offer the FlexNet network in Australia and has already helped to reduce the carbon footprint of more than 1 million homes and businesses.

The company has also saved water and electric utility customers more than $120 million on their bills every year.Technology solutions from Sensus enable the intelligent use and conservation of energy and water resources. The company is the first Advanced Metering Infrastructure and advanced metering systems partner for Fieldforce. As Australia moves forward to implement major Smart Grid initiatives, Fieldforce will continue to cement its role as a strong provider of conservation services to Australians through the FlexNet offering.

“Partnering with Sensus furthers our mission of developing global alliances that allow us to continue expanding our range of conservation services for the environmental and utility sectors,” said Tim Ryerson, executive general manager for Fieldforce, in a statement. “We look forward to bringing Sensus technologies to our customers as Australia makes the Smart Grid a reality.”

Australia stands as the recognized world leader in Smart Grid innovation, and the government has already committed as much as $100 million in the development of the Smart Grid, Smart City demonstration project. This project is designed to partner the government with the energy sector to link 9,500 homes to a Smart Grid from 2010 to 2013. This will mark the launch of Australia’s first commercial-scale Smart Grid.

“Australia has demonstrated that they are ready, willing and able to deploy Smart Grid technology today and we are excited to partner with Fieldforce to bring the Sensus FlexNet system to Australian utilities,” said Mark Wells, vice president of global business development for Sensus. “As we pursue an aggressive growth strategy, partnering with recognized industry leaders such as Fieldforce will ultimately enable us to deliver on our commitment to the intelligent use and conservation of water and energy resources on a global scale.”

A recent International Data Corporation report found that most Australian utilities are already updating their communications networks to prepare for smart metering rollouts. Among the top initiatives for utilities are smart metering and the management of data collected by those meters. As part of the upcoming ITEXPO (News - Alert) West 2010 event sponsored by TMCnet, the Smart Grid Conference is designed to address the unprecedented opportunity coming from the intersection of two core building blocks of our economy – utilities and communications. The event is based on the joint vision of TMCnet and Intelligent Communications Partners.
