Bria for Asterisk Now Available from CounterPath, Digium Partnership

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

CounterPath Corporation, a provider of desktop and mobile Voice over IP software products and solutions, and Digium, the Asterisk (News - Alert) Company, has reportedly announced a co-branded VoIP softphone platform: Bria for Asterisk.

This new solution is designed for small, medium and large enterprises, while it is also certified by CounterPath. Bria for Asterisk takes the advanced telephony and multimedia communications features found on Asterisk servers and brings them to the desktop level to improve employee productivity and collaboration.

'Today, thanks to immense investments of time and resources by the Asterisk community worldwide and Digium (News - Alert), Asterisk is the world's most commonly used open source telephony engine and toolkit,' Bill Miller, vice president of product management, Digium, said in a statement. 'Its flexibility empowers software developers to create advanced communication solutions and to integrate it with products such as CounterPath's Bria softphone. Asterisk is typically found on servers, but by partnering with CounterPath, we've extended the capabilities of Asterisk to the desktop.'

Bria for Asterisk is based on open standards and combines Digium’s Asterisk, AsteriskNOW and Asterisk Business Edition telephony platforms with Bria Professional, the enterprise-class multimedia softphone from CounterPath. With Bria for Asterisk, users gain access to advanced telephony features and the solution can be quickly set up and configured with any Asterisk deployment.

'With more than a dozen awards for our softphone solutions, CounterPath continues to drive innovation in its softphone suite of products in efforts to unify the desktop experience across multiple platforms and devices,' Todd Carothers, vice president of product management for CounterPath, said. 'Our partnership with Digium gives businesses an integrated VoIP solution that marries two best-in-breed offerings.”

Bria for Asterisk lets any PC be turned into a multimedia communications center. Users gain the ability to see presence information for their colleagues, initiate multiparty and multimedia conference calls, access telephony services from Microsoft (News - Alert) Outlook and initiate call-handling options, all with one mouse click.

“Bria for Asterisk, based on our flagship softphone Bria, seamlessly interoperates with Asterisk, enabling SMBs and enterprises to confidently implement a complete end-to-end VoIP solution that is powerful and easy to install,” Carothers said. “The next version of the Bria for Asterisk softphone will also include auto-provisioning, making for an even more valuable and cost-effective business communications solution.'

In other CounterPath news, Genesys (News - Alert), an Alcatel-Lucent company, will integrate CounterPath's Software Development Kit into its Agent Desktop product suite to bring improved VoIP to contact center customers worldwide.

The company also announced last March that it had been granted with United States patent number No. 7,502,615, which explains about a technology pertaining to handoffs between cellular and Internet Protocol telephony.
