Creating an Ecosystem for Success

By Erin Harrison, Senior Editor

As connectivity rapidly converges in ways that are transforming how people live, work and play, those companies that are able to quickly meet the massive and still largely untapped demand for mobile broadband services will lead and shape tomorrow’s market. But, the million-dollar question is: how are those doors opened?

In the words of Tamara Casey, CEO of 4DK Technologies, “The issue is not limitations in technology any longer it’s limitations in our own thinking about how we apply technology and how we partner to best achieve objectives.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s (News - Alert) ng Connect program is perhaps the ultimate think tank for businesses looking to improve their next generation communications capabilities. The program reaches across industries that wouldn’t normally intersect during the course of mainstream business and therefore offers partners the opportunity to apply technology and tools that they probably wouldn’t have thought of, with the end goal being increased customer satisfaction, new revenue streams and a ultimately a healthier bottom line.
Alcatel-Lucent’s ngConnect program offers an open LTE (News - Alert) ecosystem and industry-leading partners to help speed innovation through the development of high value applications and services. Tomorrow’s market will be led and shaped by companies able to quickly meet the massive and still largely untapped demand for 4G and LTE services, Alcatel-Lucent leaders say.
A key goal of the ng Connect Program is to stimulate innovation. One way company officials say they do this is by working with universities that are exploring the evolving needs of consumers and developing innovative applications and service scenarios.
In a CommunicAsia (News - Alert) interview with Alcatel-Lucent’s Steve West, he explains ng Connect as: “A global initiative, cross-industry ecosystem that brings together leaders in the field of innovation around infrastructure, content providers, application providers and device manufacturers. It’s an end-to-end ecosystem that is bringing together an innovative approach to foster the growth of next generation high bandwith networks.”
The ng Connect program is aimed at members, service providers and the end user and brings together infrastructure, device, application and content companies to create an “end-to-end” ecosystem with all the resources and expertise required to rapidly deliver next generation services and applications that simplify and enrich the user experience.

Some of the key issues the program addresses include:

  • Increasing bandwidth (access spectrum and network infrastructure)
  • Improving indoor wireless network coverage
  • Accelerating adoption of standards and open interoperable SDPs
  • Improving networked device capabilities while decreasing cost
  • Improving cross-application security, simplicity and privacy
  • Addressing Digital Rights Management
  • Managing QoS across IP and non-IP systems
  • Monetizing assets through new 3rd-party partnerships
Members who enroll in the ng Connect Program join for two years, with annual renewal upon the end of the term. There is no so-called membership fee, but members are expected to invest in hardware, software, expertise and other relevant resources to support ng Connect Program objectives, and to contribute to an extensive ecosystem.
