An Inside Look at What's Next for HD VoIP and Other Products

While there are many markets in the telecom industry that are on the rise, RHUB (News - Alert) Communications’ CEO Larry Dorie told TMC’s CEO Rich Tehrani in a recent interview that specific trends and devices will find their ways into the professional and personal aspects of many individuals.

 

“Devices such as the iPhone will continue to dominate because the hardware is good enough to perform over the long-haul,” Dorie said. “But, as we all know, it’s software that sells and the iPhone App Library is loaded with software tools that are not only fun to engage, but also add value to how people work and live.”

 

Dorie, who is attending and speaking at TMC’s (News - Alert) ITEXPO East 2010 in January, also discussed various leading high-definition voice features in the IP communications product and services world, and how the evolution of these products will affect the future of telecommunications.

Devices such as the iPhone will continue to dominate because the hardware is good enough to perform over the long-haul. But, as we all know, it’s software that sells and the iPhone App Library is loaded with software tools that are not only fun to engage, but also add value to how people work and live. However, if I had to give one down side to the iPhone I would say that it needs a good service provider and currently AT&T is not the best provider for this technology.

 

 

Cisco is leading the charge with High Def Video and High-Def Audio. Although video will continue to be a dominate technology, it really uses up a lot of bandwidth and it is becoming very common place – Skype, Yahoo/MSN/AOL (News - Alert) messenger etc. The drive for more bandwidth is not something that is in the distant future, it’s here and now, and, the need for even more bandwidth should be measured in months, not years. We can use DSL as an example since it is now completely inadequate and the move to the cable modem is giving people more of the speed that they need.

 

 

Trust me, if I knew, I’d be trying to do it. But I think a Web-based tablet/reader will be a progressive solution coming into the market in 2010.

 

 

Overall, we’ve been able to navigate through this tough economy pretty well. However, we did experience several months of flat sales this year – even though we’re in growing market. We anticipate 2010 to be much better with a doubling of sales.

 

Many, but the key is the lack of leadership from the Treasury (terrible dollar policy among other things) and the complete ineptitude of the SBA to provide relief for small business.

This administration is more tech savvy and friendly than most. They are trying to do a lot of interesting things in WDC (energy/electric car/ advanced battery tech….). Given the way government works the only thing that they are not doing, is a lot of what I would support, is the old DARPA type projects – like the one that resulted in the Internet in the first place or the VLSI project that advanced semiconductors or the Next Gen Controller project from SemiTech that advanced the Semi process industry…. So, I would try to get advanced labs like DARPA to fund projects in key technology areas such as advanced Internet security, more AI in medical diagnostic equipment, better satellite communications/bandwidth technology.

We are focused on enterprise collaboration and we believe that it will continue to be a rapid growth market because today’s enterprise environment is very dispersed and operates across multiple locations. The need for virtual and mobile work teams to collaborate and communicate quickly and easily will continue to grow, especially in this current global climate. Also, mobile devices will continue to grow rapidly in features and capabilities.

Organizations involved in or interested in collaboration to improve organizational functionality/performance while continuing to drive down costs should definitely attend “The Future of Web Conferencing and Collaboration”. Landline based phone service will fall off a cliff since enterprises as well as individuals will continue to cut the cord and go mobile.
