Alcatel-Lucent Advances 100G Transmission

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

As the transmission speeds cross 100 Gigabits per second, or “Gbit/s,” operators are finding it extremely difficult cope up with the increased demands. Now, Alcatel-Lucent has unveiled a cost-effective and automated way for the operators to tackle this problem by enhancing its optical networking portfolio with next-generation coherent technology.

As the web 2.0 era unfolds, many operators are finding it difficult to meet the increasing demand for bandwidth with their existing infrastructure. The ability to transmit 100 Gigabits per second is said to offer high-capacity transport at an affordable cost to these operators.

Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) demonstrated the next generation coherent detection functionality in a 112 Gbit/s field trial over an existing, heavy loaded real-traffic fiber link of Telefonica’s (News - Alert) network. During this event, live traffic was transmitted over 1,088 km between four cities, in Spain. The company plans to install next-generation coherent detection in key optical platforms to ease the strain caused by high bandwidth applications.

“The advancements to our optical portfolio further confirm the role of optical networking as a critical enabler for competitive transformation to seamlessly move to higher capacities fast and reliably,” said Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Optics activities. “In combination with our customer focus is set to help operators accelerate time to service for new applications, simplify their operations and improve performance for better total cost of ownership.”

Apart from enabling transmission of any hybrid traffic mix, Alcatel-Lucent’s optical networking portfolio also allows for dynamic wavelength assignment and restoration. It has the capacity to transmit mixed 10, 40 and 100G signals without the need for guard bands or network reengineering.

Recently, Orange Uganda Ltd selected Alcatel-Lucent to reduce their global network maintenance costs and improve network operating efficiencies. Alcatel-Lucent will build, operate and manage the Orange Uganda mobile network, by providing technical support, repair, field maintenance and program management services. This full managed services contract is the first ever in Uganda as well as in East Africa.

To be held Jan. 20 to 22 in Miami and collocated with ITEXPO East 2010, the 4GWE Conference will focus on the realities of deploying 4G technologies and delivering broadband wireless applications to a growing community of wireless broadband consumers.
