China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G W-CDMA NetworksBy Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributing Editor China Unicom, a fixed and mobile service provider in China, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy 3G W-CDMA networks in 14 Chinese provinces. According to Alcatel-Lucent officials, the company as part of the contract would provide its end-to-end 3G/W-CDMA solutions, including about 11000 Node B (News - Alert) (Base stations), Home Location Register (HLR) data base system as well network maintenance and optimization in 14 provinces: Hebei, Fujian Guangxi, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Hunan, Shandong and Xinjiang. Officials said that all the equipments supplied are ready to sustain the rapid increase of voice and data traffic and to smoothly evolve towards 3G/HSPA+ and 4G/LTE (News - Alert). Officials claimed that China Unicom with the help of the company’s multi-standard radio access solutions will be able to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership of its networks. The company’s converged radio access solution is expected to help China Unicom (News - Alert) evolve rapidly from 2G to 3G networks and offer new generation services. "China Unicom's selection of our solutions in 14 provinces further highlights Alcatel-Lucent's (News - Alert) leadership in the W-CDMA market", said Olivia Qiu, head of Alcatel-Lucent in East Asia and president of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, in a statement. Qiu said that Alcatel-Lucent is committed to partner with China Unicom and worldwide operators to deploy leading-edge next generation networks enabling advanced multimedia and Web services. With 56 commercial networks worldwide in 37 countries, Alcatel-Lucent is major player in the W-CDMA infrastructure market. Alcatel-Lucent claims that it is the trusted partner of service providers, enterprises and governments worldwide, providing solutions to deliver voice, data and video communication services to end-users. Earlier this month, Alcatel-Lucent had announced that Siam Commercial Bank Public Company Limited (SCB), a banking and finance institution in Thailand, has selected Alcatel-Lucent to design, integrate and implement next-generation call center solutions to accommodate its rapidly-growing, multi-site agent teams.
