International Calling Made Easy

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

For many people, dialing international numbers is a confusing process. That’s because international calling involves dialing a lot more numbers than most of us are accustomed to—an international dial code, a country code, an area code and finally the number itself.

Keeping track of all those numbers is inconvenient and takes time, especially if you also use a calling card to save on international calling rates. Luckily, thanks to modern telephony technology, there is an easier way.

One way to save money and time when making international calls is to use a service like that offered by Packetel (News - Alert), which kills both birds with one stone: a service with low rates that provides calling-card like savings from any phone without requiring a lot of digit dialing.

Packetel’s service provides users with a “Personal Access Number” that can be dialed from any phone to access low international calling rates. This number also provides access to an online-managed phone book. The phone book allows users to program “speed-dial” (Quick-Dial) entries for the most frequently dialed numbers.

With Quick-Dial numbers, it is possible to make an international call in two easy steps: first dial your Personal Access Number, and then the single digit associated with the international number’s Quick-Dial entry. That’s it.

Since the Personal Access Number is local for each user, significant savings can be realized when dialing long-distance or internationally. When users travel, Packetel provides toll-free access numbers to maintain the same savings outside the local area. International access numbers are also available when users travel overseas.

Services like that offered by Packetel take much of the pain and expense out of international calling. Modern telephony technology makes it easy and cheap to stay in touch with friends, colleagues and clients no matter where the calling and receiving parties are located.
