Verizon Expands HopeLine Program in California with Help of Oakland Athletics FansBy Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributing Editor Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless has teamed up with Oakland Athletics to strengthen its phone-recycling program, designed to collect used mobile phones and then make them available to survivors of domestic violence.
The initiative includes a call to fans attending Oakland A's home games to donate used wireless phones and accessories.
As part of the HopeLine program, Verizon will stock up on used wireless phones, batteries, and accessories and then sell them after recycling or refurbishing. The operator uses the proceeds to award grants and free service to non-profit human services and law enforcement agencies to aid survivors of domestic violence.
Cell phones and accessories can be donated at any Verizon Wireless store, the company said.
“Thanks in part to generous A's fans, we continue to grow our HopeLine program in California,” said Rich Garwood (News - Alert), regional president for Verizon Wireless. “Fans know that by bringing in old wireless phones and accessories they are helping domestic violence survivors in our community and making a difference for our environment.”
Verizon Wireless has awarded more than $400,000 in HopeLine grants to domestic violence prevention agencies in California in each of the past two years, as well as more than 2,400 HopeLine wireless phones during the past two years, each with one year of airtime, to domestic violence agencies throughout the state.
