Nortel Tells Wider WiMAX Story with Applications, Partners

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

Nortel is beating the WiMAX (News - Alert) drum ever louder as evidenced by a series of announcements in support of their participation at WIMAX World today.

Building on their strategic WiMAX partnership with Alvarion announced this past June, Nortel told TMCnet of expanding partnerships with companies such as IBM, WiChorus (News - Alert), and others, to deliver a comprehensive WiMAX solution to market.

Building on their rich history serving both the carrier and enterprise markets, Nortel is bundling together a unified communications solution that service providers can deliver over mobile WiMAX technology.

According to Nortel vice president of Carrier Networks Daniel Locklear, “As WiMAX is rolling out, we’re bundling packages for carriers to roll out to enterprises.”

The range of services will include IP telephony, instant messaging, Web conferencing video chat and more. Nortel is hopeful that WiMAX service providers will recognize these services as a way for them to expand their offerings and increase the size of their addressable market for WiMAX delivered services.

Nortel is also launching their “VoIP to the MAX,” campaign, a WiMAX offering designed to enable service providers to offer advanced IP voice and multimedia services. The new offer comprises Nortel’s Mobile WiMAX portfolio and something called Adaptive Application Engine or A2E, a carrier-grade, flexible multimedia server software solution.

Nortel further announced the WiChorus Home Agent as a new addition to their WIMAX portfolio. The solution, which is designed to offer service providers subscriber and content management and network optimization capabilities, should help operators leverage the Internet to drive increased Average Revenue per User and profitability.

In other related news, Nortel said they will be working with Quanta Computer (News - Alert) and Accton Wireless Broadband in Taiwan to deliver Nortel-branded 802.16e devices including PCMCIA cards, USB adapters, indoor gateways, and other solutions in the 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5 GHz frequency bands.

In a slightly different approach to next-generation wireless, several weeks ago Nortel and T-Mobile (News - Alert) announced a successful trial deployment of a solution based on LTE or long-term evolution.

According to this report on TMCnet, T-Mobile and Nortel were able to transmit data to and from a vehicle driving in Bonn between Deutsche Telekom's (News - Alert) headquarters on the left side of the river Rhine and the T-Mobile headquarters on the river’s right bank. Transmission went smoothly without interruptions and without loss of quality even across different cells on the four-kilometer test track data.
