IBM, Iberdrola to Open IT Innovation Center in Spain

Iberdrola, a leading private energy group with operations in approximately 40 countries, and IBM (News - Alert) have entered into an $84.4 million agreement to promote IT innovation in Spain.
Under the agreement, INSA, an IBM company, will open an Innovation Center at Iberdrola's new facilities in Aldeatejada (Salamanca, Spain). The center will initially handle on a software development and maintenance project for Iberdrola and its worldwide subsidiaries.
Iberdrola is considered the world’s largest wind energy producer, developing combined cycles and the lowest-emission generator. It is one of the cleanest energy producers in Europe as well.
The center will also increase the productivity of IBM's clients in Spain and Portugal through the design, development and maintenance of applications in diverse technological platforms. The Innovation Center will leverage expertise of IBM's global network to bring the latest innovations to local clients.
Collaboration with IBM is expected to further Iberdrola's commitment to innovation, scientific research and sustainable social and energy development, one of the pillars of its Strategic Plan for 2007 to 2009. During this period, Iberdrola will invest approximately EUR 200 million in Research Development and Innovation projects and develop an innovation network to share and promote ideas with its IT partners.
In addition, IBM has agreed to manage the IT infrastructure of Iberdrola's new data processing center at Aldeatejada. With this 10-year, $8.1 million agreement, Iberdrola hopes to optimize its IT resources.
