Mindspeed Announces IP Backhaul Solution for WiMAX and Other Wireless Services

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Mindspeed Technologies (News - Alert), Inc. has announced a new IP-based backhaul transport solution for wireless service providers based on the TSP3 family of network processors and the PortMakerIII software suite with pseudo-wire emulation edge to edge (PWE3). PWE3 and the PortMakerIII suite enable implementation of IP-based backhaul networks for the delivery of W-CDMA, UMTS and WiMAX services.

The Mindspeed TSP3 and PortMakerIII solution with PWE3 allows service providers to seamlessly interconnect their existing ATM backbone network with new Ethernet backhaul networks and a converged IP/MPLS core. The high-performance TSP3 network processors are designed for wireless backhaul, traffic management and Layer2 protocol interworking.

The TSP3 processor family offers wire-speed performance and combines networking-optimized microprocessors with hardware engines. Applications may deliver QoS and network domain adaptation for managing and interworking packet and/or cell streams.

The PortMakerIII supports PWE3 based on the IETF’s recent request for comments and emerging draft standards. The firmware offers fully supported binary applications for the TSP3 family, and the packet traffic management application is available off-the-shelf as part of the software suite. It provides up to 2.5 Gbps of throughput and hierarchical traffic management on up to 256K packet streams, as well as token bucket shaping, multi-protocol classification and a number of other value-added features. The TSP3 family of processors range in speed from 155M through 2.5G.

“The wireless market represents a significant opportunity for Mindspeed products designed to process and transport voice and data between legacy circuit-switched and next generation packet-based networks,” said Taqi Mohiuddin, director of marketing for Mindspeed. “Our TSP3 processing solution with PWE3 integrated into base station equipment enables service providers to utilize low-cost packet access networks as a full-service backhaul alternative to traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) for both voice and data wireless services.”
