Sigma Designs Rolls Out UWB Chipset for Wireless A/V Streaming

By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sigma Designs has announced their Windeo Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chipset, a total solution for high speed wireless A/V streaming. The new solution aims to replace HDMI cables and other A/V cabling for digital home entertainment equipment.

UWB technology supports a maximum data rate of 480 Mbps with high quality of service, low power consumption and reasonable consumer pricing. The Windeo all-CMOS chipset features the Windeo RF IC and the Windeo Baseband IC with an integrated PHY, MAC and embedded 32-bit RISC core. Both ICs are based on the WiMedia Alliance MAC and PHY specifications. The chipset offers high performance wireless data rates using three bands centered at 3.43 GHz, 3.96 GHz and 4.48 GHz with a spectrum spread of 528 MHz.

The Sigma patent-pending Intelligent Array Radio technology extends coverage range and also maximizes wireless link reliability and minimizes undesirable interference. The technology uses multiple receive radios to process multi-channel signals, which are subject to an adaptive algorithm to optimize amplitude and phase under a variety of channel environments.

“The Windeo Chipset with our patent-pending Intelligent Array Radio technology can deliver, with superior quality, multiple audio/video streams to digital entertainment systems over highly reliable wireless connections,” said Hung Nguyen, vice president and general manager of the wireless products division at Sigma Designs (News - Alert). “We are successfully demonstrating high definition video streaming that is uninhibited by walls, objects or people. It also allows customers to mount their TVs on walls and not have to worry about running the HDMI or analog cables across the room.”

“We are excited to offer customers a versatile and total solution with Sigma’s popular media processor chips including reference designs and software so that they can achieve fast time-to-market,” Nguyen added.

Be sure to catch the debut of the Service Provider Summit at the upcoming INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & Expo, WEST, which runs October 10-13, 2006, in San Diego, focusing on key issues number portability, ENUM, e911 (News - Alert), IMS, SIP and much more.
