DiVitas and AirMagnet Partner to Deliver Seamless Roaming Between WiFi and Cellular Networks
By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Enterprises will soon be able to seamlessly roam between internal WiFi (News - Alert) and external cellular networks thanks to collaboration between DiVitas Networks, a provider of seamless, unified mobility solutions for enterprise networks and AirMagnet, a wireless network assurance solutions company.
The two companies are working together to deliver next-generation, VoWiFi solutions for enterprises. The deployment of dual-mode handsets is possible due to the combination of DiVitas’ mobility solutions and AirMagnet’s wireless security and analysis solutions. Dual-mode handsets offer a cost-effective and reliable alternative to the traditional desk phone.
Seamless roaming between WiFi and cellular networks is made possible through DiVitas’ mobile communications solution, which works in any WLAN environment, with any PBX and over any type of fixed, mobile or wireless network. In addition, the solution is able to integrate with business and enhanced communications applications such as CRM.
Vivek Khuller, president and CEO of DiVitas Networks noted that there are two issues that the VoIP industry is now facing – the lack of fast roaming and QoS on internal VoIP-enabled WLANs and the complicated technology behind handing off live calls between an internal VoWiFi and external cellular network.
The key element to the expansion of the VoWiFi market is the ability to provide enterprise-level VoWiFi complete with smooth call handoffs. InfoTech recently completed a survey that revealed the enterprise VoWiFi market will grow to $1.1 billion by 2010 and the majority of sales will come from the deployment of dual-mode handsets.
Greg Yates, executive Vice President of AirMagnet contributed that with the addition of the voice application to a wireless network, new challenges are introduced. Along with overall security of the network, quality of service becomes a real issue when trying to make a call. AirMagnet’s solution offers the best-in-class monitoring and troubleshooting tools available for voice.
In addition to AirMagnet’s mobile products, DiVitas will also utilize AirMagnet’s dedicated monitoring and security solution to provide remote monitoring and troubleshooting services for its customers. DiVitas selected AirMagnet as a partner to ensure that customers are receiving the security and performance required to support voice on their wireless infrastructures.
There are significant benefits that an enterprise can gain by having the flexibility of a dual-mode handset compared to the traditional desk phone. Employees can be much more mobile while also being able to rely on the wireless infrastructure when communicating with customers.
Reliability in call handoffs will be essential for this technology. Regardless of how promising the technology solution can be, if a call to a major client is dropped when roaming throughout the organization, the impression left on the customer can be that the enterprise does not have the proper infrastructure to handle their account and business can be lost.
Although everyone has probably experienced a bad connection or a dropped call, the risk of conveying the wrong message is too great to accept anything less than 100 percent reliability. If DiVitas and AirMagnet can indeed deliver on this, their solution is sure to lead the market.
