ZyXel Offers WiFi Internet Phone

ZyXel, which provides broadband access solutions for service providers as well as business and home users, recently unveiled version 2 of its Prestige 2000W cordless WiFi (News - Alert) phone.
The P-2000W is a slim Internet phone which has distinctive features over most Internet-based phone services. It has a small and a mono-sized screen and a decent-sized keypad, as well as a socket for a standard mobile headset (one of which is included in the box). The phone can be charged either via a USB cable or the supplied power adapter, making for a compact, portable package.
A separate account with a VoIP service has to be set up in order to use the phone. The handset works with many of the most popular Internet phone services, including Gradwell.com, SIPGate, BT’s Broadband voice services or Skype (News - Alert). Connection to these services is easily established by connecting the handset to a PC with a web browser or by clicking the phone’s internal menus.
The handset can be easily configured for wireless LAN. It is easy to install, configure or use via the LCD screen or a web browser. With an already established PC-based soft phone, the connection will take about 10 to 15 minutes. As long as the Internet connection is good, the call quality will be good as well.
The P-W2000 phone is the most recent innovation in ZyXel’s series of Internet phones.
ZyXel was established in 2004 to manage the UK market. It is aimed at creating Internet access solutions that articulate information exchange and improve the effectiveness of people and companies.
ZyXel is a company which is dedicated to innovation. It claims to have devoted a sizable 6 percent of its revenues to R&D, employing over 25 percent of its working arm for these efforts. It has come a long way from modems and ISON terminal adapters to offering comprehensive networking solutions such as firewall and wireless technology for SOHO and small business Internet access environments.
The call control protocol of the P-2000W is based on SIP v2 (Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) version 2, RFC 3261) open standard, which is interoperable with major SIP-based call servers, IP-PBXs, and other standard SIP-based client devices. The P-2000W is compliant with the IEEE 802.11b standard and interoperates with any existing 802.11b or 802.11g wireless AP and gateway. It may be used as a cordless handset for residential users or for business users in an office environment. The small form factor of the handset is easy to transport and allows users to place VoIP phone calls in public 802.11-based environment.
The P-2000W is capable of tagging features that support a service provider’s QoS (Quality of Service) planning, such as ToS (Type of Service). It allows gateways or central side equipment to identify and prioritize voice and data traffic. By supporting G.711 and G.729 voice compression technology, the P-2000W effectively reduces bandwidth consumption caused by voice traffic.
The P-2000W travel charger design makes it easier for users to carry and use the phone in different site.
By configuring a remote IP address in the built-in phone book, the P-2000W provides a direct IP-to-IP call feature when there is no intermediate SIP proxy server available in the network. The P-2000W can also establish an 802.11 ad-hoc network (computer-to-computer network without access point), which allows users to use the handsets as wireless intercoms.
