Polycom Joins Cisco Developer Network Program

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

In a move signaling a greater desire to expand it partnerships with industry leaders, Polycom Inc., a provider of telepresence, video and voice communication solutions, announced today it has joined the Cisco (News - Alert) Developer Network Program.

Under the partnership, the Pleasanton, Calif.-based company will be part of the program’s Unified Communications (News - Alert) technology category.

The Cisco Developer Network links Cisco Systems with third-party developers of hardware and software to deliver tested interoperable solutions to joint customers.  Program members are required to undergo interoperability testing based on Cisco’s criteria.

In related news, Polycom’s (News - Alert) HDX 4000 HDX 6000 HDX 7000, HDX 8000 and HDX 9000 systems have completed interoperability testing with Cisco's Unified Communications Manager versions 6.0 and 7.0. With the company’s HDX series telepresence systems, customers can quickly deploy a range of Cisco-compatible business applications, devices, or services that can boost the capabilities, performance, and management of their Cisco network, company officials said.

According to the company, Polycom interoperability solutions let customers deploy a Polycom video environment and link it to their Cisco UC environment. This lets Polycom’s full line of video endpoints and Polycom video management infrastructure share a common dialing plan with Cisco IP telephony or video endpoints.

“The result is streamlined communication that allows any device to connect with any other device in a point to point, or multipoint conference,” Polycom Web site said.

Meanwhile, in the video space, Polycom’s video telephony solutions can connect to Cisco Unified Communications Manager and tap all the applications in a Cisco UC environment including Cisco Unified Video Conferencing, Cisco Unified MeetingPlace, Cisco Unified Application Environment and WebEx. These solutions, Polycom said, let customers tap their existing investment in Cisco Unified Communications and launch an “extended range of IP devices” that offer choices on cost, features and functionality depending on end-user requirements.

Polycom is the latest firm to join the Cisco Developer Network program. In September, Sipera Systems announced it joined the program’s Unified Communications solution category. Sipera (News - Alert) Systems also said that its UC-Sec security appliance version 3.8 “successfully’ completed interoperability testing with Cisco Unified Presence Server 7.0, Cisco Unified Presence Client 7.0, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager 7.0.
