Going Commercial in the Smart Grid Industry: The Evolution of GreenBus Platform

By Jaclyn Allard, TMCnet Copy Editor

In a recent statement, Randy Brecheisen, president and CEO of Piedmont Electric, announced his invested interest in Green Energy Corp’s GreenBus Platform, “We have been close to the development and evolution of the GreenBus over the last year.” And evolve it has, with Green Energy Corp’s release of a Total Grid open source community hosting the GreenBus platform, a GreenBus Alliance Program for developers and integrators was quickly implemented. Then, almost immediately, the GreenBus platform  found a home within the National Science Foundation funded Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems Center (FREEDM).

The GreenBus solution, a platform allowing for rapid development of utility applications and the only open source solution that supports interoperability of legacy and new applications, has taken the smart grid market by storm. Brecheisen added, “Our commitment to incorporate the GreenBus into our smart grid initiatives reflects our expectation for an immediate impact on our operating efficiency, as well as providing a much needed technology platform to support upcoming needs…”  Green Energy Corp, a software technology company enabling traditional and emerging power providers to move to the smart grid, with the belief that it can support the upcoming needs of all utilities, revealed the commercial release of its GreenBus platform today, Feb. 1.

Glenn Booth, VP of Marketing, commented, “At the heart of a smarter, more intelligent power grid, is the requirement to capture and manage the flood of new real-time data. GreenBus was specifically developed to accommodate this demand, while adding a new level of security for utilities.” At the core of the GreenBus is a secure middleware platform that captures extremely high volume, real-time field device data, and interconnecting that data with operations and business systems. With this new access to grid intelligence and coordinated applications, utilities are able to make smart grid a reality and a part of daily operations.

Green Energy Corp’s commitment to an open source, connecting a global community of engineers and developers to create, test and share smart solutions, will not only drive rapid innovation, but is expected to accelerate the adoption of standards as well. “An open source strategy is vital if we are to transform to a smart grid, and to allow utilities of all sizes to own their information destiny,” said Peter Gregory, CEO of Green Energy Corp. “It is the only cure for the silos that exist at virtually every utility. GreenBus customers have the only path to effectively integrate old but critical legacy devices with advanced technology accessible in a managed, virtualized platform.” Is the GreenBus platform part of your information destiny?

In other news, at this week’s Smart Grid Summit, a colocated event of ITEXPO (News - Alert) East, Roxy Podlogar of Green Energy Corp., along with Doug DePeppe of i2IS will be giving a joint keynote speech. This panel is an example of an emerging smart grid technology that is believed to have a lot of promise to help utilities share data in a more secure manner.
