ZyXEL Rolls Out Industry's First 802.11n Bonded ADSL2+ Gateway

By Patrick Barnard, Senior Web Editor, TMCnet

ZyXEL Communications (News - Alert) today introduced what it claims is the industry’s first 802.11n bonded ADSL2+ gateway for network operators.

Available immediately, the P663HN offers a complete home networking package with bonded ADSL2+ modem, 11n wireless, 4-port switch and built-in secure firewall, all in a single CPE device.

Bonded ADSL2+ technology allows service providers to double the bandwidth over existing copper infrastructure. That means they can deliver next generation services such as IPTV (News - Alert) and VoIP to customers without having to run new lines and install new cabling in each and every house. Thus they can deliver next gen services much more cost effectively.

The P663HN with 802.11n wireless technology delivers networking speeds of up to 300Mbps and superior wireless coverage eliminating dead spots. With this device installed in their homes, customers will be able to stream videos to their flat panel TVs from the Internet, play games online and video chat with distant relatives.

With 802.11n technology and multiple external antennas to maximize the speed and range of a wireless signals, customers will be able to connect laptops, dual mode phones, and other handheld devices to the Internet wirelessly from anywhere in their homes. Incorporating Wi-Fi into customer premises equipment is a key way for service providers to deliver home networking options and boost customer satisfaction.

The P663HN’s ATM-based multi-paired bonding groups two ports into one logical link, supporting up to 48Mbps downstream and 4Mbps upstream — effectively doubling the original speed of installed copper infrastructure. In addition, individual port bit rates can be freely and independently changed by their respective physical layer.

The P663HN also comes with both ATM and IP QoS features, allowing operators to implement their QoS policy based on an individual subscriber’s service plan. Thus operators can prioritize services such as IPTV and VoIP, increasing network efficiency.

The P663HN also sports TR-069 standard management specifications, enabling operators to remotely manage and configure the device from the central office. This not only offers customers a true plug-and-play experience, it reduces costly truck rolls for operators.

The device also has a WLAN/WPS button that lets users turn the device on and off in the event they are going away on a trip in order to conserve energy.

Anaheim, Calif.-based ZyXEL offers reliable, end-to-end, fully converged solutions for delivering broadband access, services and applications from the central office into the home. The company’s affordable, high-performance products include MSANs, xDSL DSLAMs and CPEs, cable access, broadband-sharing, WiMAX (News - Alert), VoIP, Ethernet, network security, wireless and connected home solutions for a wide range of deployment scenarios.

ZyXEL Communications Inc made news back in April when it announced that its P-2910 series of gateways had been certified to comply with DOCSIS 3.0 and PackeCable 1.5 specifications.
