snom Discusses IP Phone Operability with Microsoft Lync

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Web Editor

Back in October at IT EXPO West in Los Angeles California, TMC’s (News - Alert) Erin Harrison had the opportunity to interview Mike Storella, director of business development for snom.

snom technology AG develops and manufacturers Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephones based on open standard for enterprise communications.  snom phones can be operated with a large number of compatible IP-PBX that support the Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert), giving customers a great choice for enterprise communication systems.

According to the interview, over the last couple of months, snom has been working intently with the Microsoft Lync program which was formerly known as OCS.

According to Storella, snom has recently been qualified for the snom 300 phone to be directly operable with Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync. The news of the connection between snom products and Microsoft Lync provides a great opportunity for the company to find its niche in the enterprise space.

Storella explains that the relationship with Microsoft Lync is very important to snom.” Our phones have always been about following the SIP standard and being open with everybody that uses the SIP protocol to do Voice over IP.”

“It’s a good process for the Lync product to have a phone that can connect to Lync and also other SIP servers or VoIP systems at the same time,” Storella added. “It gives the customer a good ownership value that this is really an independent, intelligent endpoint and a land appliance that happens to look like a telephone. “

In terms of unified communications, for snom, it means taking calls anywhere on any device at a very high level. It also means getting information on your endpoint device that is valuable when trying to do business on a day to day basis.

Snom believes it’s also about having a common address book and a common presence information. “We see Microsoft doing all these things with their products and we think that our products can actually match up to that pretty well,” Storella concluded.
