By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

XO Communications, a provider of advanced broadband communications services and VoIP solution, announced that it has expanded its carrier-grade broadband wireless coverage in Northern Virginia by deploying a new wireless hub in the Tyson's Corner area of Northern Virginia.

With this expansion, XO Communications (News - Alert) gives businesses an alternative for high-speed network services. The network expansion also provides companies with an additional level ofnetwork redundancy and business continuity, according to company officials.

The wireless hub technology enables XO Communications to extend the reach of its 19,000-mile nationwide fiber network.

From wireless hubs deployed on its fiber network, XO Communications can connect customer locations directly to its network via high-speed point-to-point wireless links at speeds from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps to deliver a number of services includingVoice over Internet Protocol, Ethernet, MPLS IP-VPN and private line services as well as network redundancy and business continuity solutions, according to company officials.

XO Communications' broadband wireless coverage spans the greater Washington, D.C., region, across all of Washington, DC and suburbs of Northern Virginia and Maryland, according to company officials.

"XO's expanded broadband wireless capabilities opens the door to a wider world of options for high-speed network access for businesses across the region that do not have fiber access at their locations or lack a wide range of alternatives providers," said Billy Becker, general manager of the Washington, D.C., market for XO Communications. "This expansion is part of our continuing focus to provide businesses with innovative high-speed network services."

In March XO Communications announced that it is planning to deploy Nokia Siemens Networks'40 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing or "DWDM" solution, TMCnet reported. The DWDM solution will help XO meet the increasing bandwidth and low-latency requirements of businesses and carriers, according to XO officials.

Earlier this year, XO Communications announced Technology Marketing Corporation's INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine has named XO Enterprise SIP as a recipient of its 2009 Product of the Year Award.
