Qwest Ethernet Services Selected by the State of UtahBy Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor Qwest Communications has been selected by the state of Utah to provide an economical, converged voice and data network. Qwest (News - Alert) will use its Ethernet solution to provide state and local government and businesses in Utah with access to additional bandwidth speeds.
Qwest Ethernet services allow customers to scale their bandwidth needs and use the flexibility of Ethernet to transmit data between multiple locations. These services make use of the company's local, metropolitan, national and international assets to securely and reliably connect multiple business locations across a metro area.
As part of the three-year, $7.2 million agreement, 30 government sites have already been connected and also, Qwest began connecting 300 locations in Salt Lake City and along Utah’s Wasatch Front using Qwest’s Metro Optical Ethernet data networking platform. Across metro area networks, the Qwest-designed solution leverages the power of Ethernet and optical technologies.
“We’re working with the State of Utah to help provide citizens with innovative ways to access government services,” Sharon Montgomery, vice president, Qwest government and education solutions, said in a statement. “Qwest Ethernet lets people work online instead of standing in line at the DMV and other state agencies. Consolidating technologies saves the state time and money, and can do the same for Utah’s business community.”
Qwest’s network supports a number of bandwidth-intensive activities with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second to each site. Apart from delivering impressive bandwidth speeds, the network can also meet projected demand for online services. With the speed and bandwidth of Qwest's Ethernet solution, the state of Utah can provide convenient, accessible, and efficient government services to citizens and local businesses.
The company recently celebrated its 25th anniversary of operations. To mark this milestone, the company is offering 25 minutes of free international calling for Latino customers. El Centro de Qwest was founded in 1984 to provide customer service to Hispanic Qwest customers. The company achieved this milestone with two locations in Phoenix and Salt Lake City and more than 350 bilingual employees. Raju Shanbhag is a contributing editor for TMCnet.
