TELUS Speeds Things Up in Western Canada

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributing Editor

TELUS (News - Alert) customers can now access wireless high speed Internet anywhere they can use a TELUS cellphone in B.C. and Alberta.

Thanks to a $100 million investment since 2005 to install hardware at more than 1,100 cellsites in these areas and the installation at the final site on Mount Byng, near Port Alice on northern Vancouver Island, customers now have wireless access to the Internet at speeds approaching home Internet service.

TELUS wireless service reaches about 95 per cent of B.C. and Alberta residents and they are now be able to enjoy wireless high speed that would offer users typical download speeds of approximately 450 to 800 kilobits per second to a maximum possible speed of 3.1 megabits per second.

The service also offers enhanced upload speeds of approximately 300 to 400 kilobits per second with a maximum possible upload speed of 1.8 megabits per second.

"Western Canadians can now enjoy access to wireless broadband Internet pretty much anywhere they happen to be, whether downtown Vancouver, in Nakusp, Grande Prairie or Drumheller," Rizwan Jamal, senior vice-president of TELUS Consumer Solutions said in a press release.

"For busy people on the go that means being able to connect with others, wherever and however they choose to communicate - email, instant-messaging, texting, or even via social networking such as Facebook (News - Alert). It also means they can unleash the power of the internet and conduct online searches, access navigation tools, or even access their work files from outside the office."
