By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Telekom Austria ( News - Alert) has selected Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) -- a supplier of digital TV systems and software solutions for interactive television -- to supply high definition, Advanced Video Coding (AVC) ADB-3800W IPTV set-top boxes (STB) for their IPTV ( News - Alert) television services.
In addition to 82 TV programs, the IPTV television service includes Video-on-Demand (VOD) comprising movies, series and documentaries, an electronic program guide and information services, incorporating news, traffic information, and radio channels, according to ADB officials.
Officials explained that ADB-3800W is an advanced IPTV set-top box incorporating standard definition -- SD: 36.07, +0.36, +1.00 percent -- and HDTV reception and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. The unit therefore enables operators to optimize their broadcast bandwidth.
The product features single-chip microprocessor and HDMI interface. According to officials, ADB’s operating software ensures “enhanced system and product performance including fast channel decoding and swift rendering of on-screen graphics and applications.” Also, the unit is fully compatible with TV centric, interactive applications such as web browsing.
“Telekom Austria selected ADB as a result of its proven ability as a trusted and experienced supplier of set-top boxes to the IPTV market. We needed a partner who could offer a very efficient route to market and ADB had the necessary experience in hardware and software integration required to meet our launch expectations,” Helmut Leopold, head of platform and technology management at Telekom Austria, commented in a statement.
He also anticipates that there will be an overwhelming response for their IPTV service, which is a very important part of his company’s triple play service offering targeted at residential customers.
“ADB is delighted to support Telekom Austria for the launch of a new set-top box for their IPTV service,” said Jim Lomax, Head of EMEA sales and marketing at ADB. “We already gained unique knowledge and experience by supplying state-of-the-art digital product solutions to a number of major telecommunications operators.”
He also said that ADB is very well placed to support new IPTV set-top box launches, such as Telekom Austria, quickly and effectively.
