Hughes Introduces New WAN Optimization and Application Acceleration Technology

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Hughes Network Systems, LLC, a provider of broadband networks and services, has added new WAN optimization and application acceleration capabilities to its comprehensive suite of HughesNet Managed Network Services.

The new capabilities improve application performance and increase overall network efficiency, and are available for all broadband technologies - - wired, wireless and satellite -- thus dramatically reducing deployment costs and complexity, according to Hughes company’s officials.

Comparing their company’s solution with that of competitors, officials pointed out that unlike competing solutions -- which typically require an additional acceleration appliance at every location or are limited to a single broadband access technology -- the new capabilities are integrated into access routers at each location.

Officials explained as a result, enterprises can now experience the application level “prioritization and optimization” normally associated with leased-line MPLS networks, on broadband IP VPN networks.

The Hughes solution, according to officials, is ideal for enterprises that are experiencing poor application performance on their current broadband networks, or for customers on legacy networks seeking to migrate to IP networks.

“As more and more applications are deployed over wide area networks, IT managers are struggling with how best to manage their bandwidth without increasing costs, while maintaining performance of critical business applications,” noted Brian Washburn, research director at Current Analysis.

He commented in a statement that Hughes is addressing a key market need by enabling enterprise customers to “enjoy a truly differentiated managed service over a broadband IP VPN without incurring the cost and complexity of a full MPLS network deployment.”

“With our new WAN optimization and application acceleration capabilities, Hughes delivers a managed service with application delivery capabilities similar to an MPLS VPN, but at a significantly lower cost point,” said Mike Cook, senior vice present for North America at Hughes.

He also said that the new HughesNet offerings improve network utilization and performance of TCP applications by addressing common latency issues such as slow-start and window scaling.
