KPN: 20K VoIP Subs Weekly
By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director
Looks like Euro-VoIP remains on the rise.
Dutch telco KPN announced that they are receiving up to 20,000 orders for their VoIP offering. Every week!
According to a statement issued by the former Dutch telecom monopoly, the company has doubled the capacity of its call centers and boosted the number of engineers to handle installations.
In what might possibly be a slight understatement, KPN said its combined broadband Internet and telephony offer had become "immensely popular."
Earlier this year, Infonetics Research had predicted continued growth for VoIP in the European market. In fact the researchers believe that in Europe, VoIP service revenue will grow from: $2.3 billion to $12.7 billion in Europe between 2005 and 2009, with the vast majority (72%) of VoIP service revenue coming from residential customers:
According to published reports, KPN added about 114,000 customers for its Internet telephony product in the third quarter, which translates to a pace of approximately 8,800 signups a week.
In the meantime, a regulator is exploring the possibility of breaking up KPN into two entities: a services organization and a network group.
OPTA, who according to a Reuters report, recently issued its “2007 Vision and Year Plan” report espousing the possible split, is an organization charged with “supervising compliance with legislation and regulations in the areas of post and electronic communications.”
