DiBcom Integrates its Technology with Mio and Garmin Navigation devicesBy Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor DiBcom, a provider of multistandard Mobile TV solutions, has announced that the technology of the company is now integrated into brands Mio and Garmin (News - Alert) Navigation devices. This integration will facilitate the reception of digital television, announced the company.
DiBcom's (News - Alert) new DiB9090 chipset is built into the new Free-to-air televsion-enabled GPS receivers. As these devices witnessed a high volume of sales during 2008 and 2009, the future looks promising for them, claims DiBcom. Combining satellite navigation, digital television and other multimedia options, Sat Navs have now become veritable mobile multimedia devices.
The navigation functions of a GPS device in only used for approximately 6 percent of all trips as drivers generally use their vehicle for similar journeys. So, new Sat Nav devices provide additional feature so that so that users can enjoy their utility during the remaining 94 percent of the time.
Yannick Levy, CEO of DiBcom says: “The penetration rate for digital television and other multimedia functions built into GPS devices could reach 20 percent in Europe by 2011. Korea was the first country to witness an almost 100 percent penetration rate for Mobile television integrated GPS devices. In Europe today the rate is lower, partly due to the difficulty experienced in receiving Free-to-air signals.”
The reception quality of mobile TV is lower at present due to lack of technologies and necessary infrastructure. DiBcom states that the technology provided by the company offers solutions to such problems. The company believes that depending on the bitrate, it is possible to transmit different types of information 'Services' that can share the transmission medium. The company plans to develop mobile access to allow for higher traffic in order to provide the same information presently from fixed systems.
Recently, the company joined hands with Cadence Design Systems for an intensive project. Together, the two companies implemented a major methodology shift resulting in the smooth and successful tapeout of a revolutionary programmable platform called "Octopus," which offers manufacturers a flexible and powerful solution to the problem of multiple standards worldwide for fixed and mobile TV.
