By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?
For manufacturers of portable media players looking for recognition at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the answer turned out to be: SanDisk’s soon-to-be-launched Sansa Connect, priced at $249.99.
The company snagged first place in the “MP3 and portable video” category for its WiFi ( News - Alert)-enabled MP3 player by CNET, which hosted the awards. The device, created through a partnership with mobile entertainment technology company ZING, was also voted “top portable audio player” by LAPTOP Magazine.
What’s so special about the Sansa Connect? Some of the noteworthy features that helped the device win distinction at CES ( News - Alert) include:
-
Sleek design
-
WiFi capability
-
Compatibility with premium Internet services
-
4 gigabytes of Flash memory
-
One-click tools for recommending music and photos
Perhaps the most important of those features is Sana Connect’s WiFi capabilities, which, when it hits U.S. store shelves in March, will put it in direct competition with Microsoft’s ( News - Alert) much-hyped Zune.
In an announcement about the award, CNET cited SanDisk’s innovation, creativity, and responsiveness to the needs of customers as reasons why the company and its product deserve this award.
“We’re thrilled that both CNET and LAPTOP editors--who see the best new devices every day--recognized the Sansa Connect as an exceptional MP3 player,” SanDisk product marketing director Eric Bone said in a statement. “We’re very excited to bring this to market for consumers to enjoy.”
In all, 600 products at CES were entered in the CNET awards, and 10 of those were honored.
