UIEvolution and Samsung Mobile Launch Samsung Widget SDK

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

UIEvolution (News - Alert), along with Samsung Mobile, has launched Samsung Widget SDK, which can be used to make connected mobile apps for Samsung’s (News - Alert) lineup of TouchWiz touchscreen phones.

UIEvolution deals in mobile convergence technology, which it claims enables rich experiences across the widest variety of platforms in the world.

Samsung Mobile has stated that most of its phones are touch screen and TouchWiz runs as the core UI. By launching the widget SDK, Samsung has opened up TouchWiz to third parties.

The widget SDK will allow developers to create their own desktop gadgets for not only the Windows Mobile version of the UI but the company’s own proprietary OS. Developers can use web technologies like HTML, JavaScript and CSS (News - Alert) to create their widgets and make them compatible on different TouchWiz UI enabled platforms with minimum modifications.

UIEvolution had built this Widget SDK based on the developer-embraced open-source Eclipse platform. By leveraging this platform developers can utilize their existing plug-ins offered by the Eclipse community of world-wide industry professionals.

Samsung Mobile has stated that with the launch of Widget SDK with UIEvolution they are offering their development community the ability to make innovative widgets for customers. Its goal is to make it easier and more efficient than ever before for developers to create personalized experiences for mobile consumers.

UIEvolution has stated that Samsung Mobile understands that developers are faced with several options for building mobile apps and with the Samsung Innovator program they are demonstrating their commitment to the mobile developer community. UIEvolution officials say they are excited to partner with Samsung in the launch of a rich toolset for developers to extend their services to consumers with compelling, cool and personalized Samsung Widgets.

With the Samsung Widget SDK, developers can easily integrate Samsung APIs with code-completion, code templates and sample projects. There is also provision in the Mobile SDK to test and preview in-development widget on target devices via a PC which removes the complexity of targeting multiple devices.

As a start to the Samsung Widget SDK program, Samsung Mobile Innovator will launch a Widget Developer Camp scheduled for Sept. 11-13 in San Francisco. Developers can submit applications and selected applicants will be allowed to attend the camp.

Sprint (News - Alert) and Samsung recently announced that they have gone “green” with a “corn-based” phone -- and Samsung Mobile recently unveiled a WiMAX (News - Alert)-enabled mobile Internet device.
