Skyhook Teams with Apot for AndroidBy Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor WiFi (News - Alert) positioning systems company Skyhook Wireless has teamed its hybrid positioning system XPS with Apot, a Twitter client for Android (News - Alert).
Apot, a Twitter client created by adlib Ltd., allows users to post updates to their Twitter accounts. Now, using Skyhook, users can post messages and pictures with their current location included. This allows others to view that location on a map.
“Location is a key feature of my Apot app, and requires exact positioning. This is especially true in Tokyo, where GPS often fails to perform. Skyhook provides better navigation even if you are underground or in a commercial complex," said Takeshi Kabata, developer at Adlib.
The Apot services can be downloaded for free in the Android Marketplace and Skyhook Wireless (News - Alert) offers a publicly available SDK for Android developers, available here.
“Apot is an example of a social networking app using location in a cool way,” said Kate Imbach, director of marketing for Skyhook Wireless. “With Skyhook in the app, users are able to share their precise location with friends, allowing closer connections and a richer experience on Twitter.”
Skyhook Wireless developed the first hybrid positioning system designed to leverage Wi-Fi, GPS and cell towers delivering location data supporting the growing market for location-based services.
