'Green' Hosting Company AISO.Net to Host Live Earth Global Concert Series Web Site

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

AISO.Net, which claims to the world’s only solar-powered Web hosting company, announced Thursday that it was chosen to host the liveearth.org Web site. This site promotes the 24/7, seven-continent Live Earth (News - Alert) concert series that will occur on July 7, 2007.

In keeping with its ‘green,’ environmentally-friendly practices, AISO.Net designed a dedicated, reliable solution using energy-efficient IBM (News - Alert) BladeCenter servers to host liveearth.org. This ‘green’ focus was necessary because the Live Earth concert series is designed to inspire the world’s population to take simple steps toward a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

“We are doing everything we can do to be totally responsible and being the industry leader in environmental Web hosting,” said Phil Nail, technology manager for AISO.Net, in a statement. “We are very excited about Live Earth choosing AISO to host their Web site, showing the world that AISO.Net truly cares about our environment.”

Live Earth chose AISO.Net after finding out that the company is the only ‘truly green’ Web hosting provider, a distinction it maintains by running its data center on solar power only. Achieving such ‘greenness,’ AISO.Net said in its announcement, is possible thanks to the IBM BladeCenter servers (with AMD (News - Alert) processors) it uses.

Blade computers, the company explained, integrate servers, storage, networking and application onto a single system. This reduces the physical footprint, in turn cutting down on server ‘farms’ and the associated large number of IT staff needed to manage them. Blade computers also help AISO.Net reduce its power needs by requiring less cooling.

“AISO.Net chose IBM and AMD over the other major vendors because of success with IBM’s hardware, the open and highly-available design of BladeCenter and excellent customer service,” Nail said.

He added: “We can run the Live Earth Web site on IBM BladeCenter and get great performance without having the power draw we would have had with rack servers.”

Using IBM blade servers isn’t the only step AISO.Net has taken to reduce its need for power (making its singular reliance on solar power more feasible). The company is now in the midst of making additional ‘green’ modifications to its data center.

These efforts include installing new carpeting made from recycled content, replacing fluorescent light bulbs with LED lighting, repainting the building with LEED certified paint and installing an underground grey water tank to keep its outdoor landscaping moist.
