In the days of TDM-based PBXs, the Branch Office was the poor-relation in the family, with its own key system or small PBX (without the sophisticated functionality provided by HQ’s main PBXs) or use local PSTN lines. A travesty considering in many cases Branch Offices are the local face to their customers, deserving of the best communications, not the worst.

The era of digital IP-PBXs introduced more sophisticated communications for Branches, but even then VoIP was just used to reduce communications and wiring costs. It did almost nothing to address distributed premise-based equipment or provide integrated applications interworking.

The revolution that provided data center-based communications addressed most of these issues, and provided huge savings in initial and operational costs. Branches were reduced to providing simpler gateway (and supporting) functions, and could be replicated easily.
