Trilliant Chosen by British Gas to Provide Communications Equipment for Smart Grid Meter Deployment

By Sujata Garud, TMCnet Contributor

Trilliant Incorporated has been chosen by British Gas to provide the communications equipment for their Smart Meter deployment. British Gas, part of Centrica plc, is the United Kingdom's leading energy and home services provider.

In 2010, the initial roll out to support over 1,000,000 of British Gas' nearly 16 million customer accounts is expected to be completed. The energy provider has previously deployed Trilliant's (News - Alert) UnitySuite Head-End Software as the enterprise system to manage all smart energy devices, and now has selected Trilliant to provide the communications equipment to connect smart electric meters, gas meters, in-home smart energy devices, and other future home energy devices such as solar, wind, and electric vehicle chargers.

In a press release, Petter Allison, British Gas director of Smart Metering, said, "Trilliant's smart metering communications product and expertise already forms an invaluable part of British Gas' smart meter ecosystem. We are pleased that Trilliant is able to help us further develop and improve our smart meter deployment plans."

Andy White, president and CEO of Trilliant, said, “Trilliant is excited to deepen our relationship with British Gas. We look forward to playing an even more central role in the rapidly accelerating UK smart metering programme by providing an end-to-end, open standard, multi-network communications solution that is compatible with emerging UK smart meter regulations."

The U.K. Department for Energy and Climate Change has set the target of having smart meters in every home by 2020 or sooner. This amounts to roughly 47 million meters at 26 million locations. Smart meters combined with a Smart Grid provides transparency into energy consumption for both utilities and consumers, helping people reduce their energy bills, reducing utility operational expenditures, all while also reducing carbon emissions nationwide.

Recently, Trilliant Incorporated and Siemens (News - Alert) Energy announced product interoperability for integrating distribution automation solutions for utility customers.
