Firefox Expected to Have Cloud Sync Features in Next Version

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

Mozilla Labs is incorporating cloud sync features into the next version of Firefox - the popular Web browser.
The features were developed by Mozilla Labs and were initially known as "Weave Sync" but were recently renamed "Firefox Sync."
Until the new version of Firefox is released, users can download Firefox Sync as an add-on.
In addition to graduating from incubation and changing names, the latest version of Firefox Sync, v1.3, has some new features such as:
--Availability in more than 15 languages including German, French, Spanish, Italian and Chinese
--A simpler sign-up and setup process
--A single button to access remote tabs
Mozilla Labs said it will continue to improve user control over personal information, and look for more innovations from developers.
The company also said that it has been working on an application for Apple's iPhone (News - Alert) based on Firefox Sync technology. The app is called "Firefox Home", and it will give iPhone users instant access to their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks, and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session.

In February, Mozilla said it was releasing developer resources and a number of early prototypes and sample code that have been developed alongside the Weave Application Programming Interface, known as API, including:
--Web-based Weave client: A complete Weave data viewer implemented in Javascript.
--Commandline Weave client: Command-line application and library written in Python.
--WebOS Weave client: A complete Weave data viewer for Palm's WebOS.
In a related matter, after serving as a powerhouse in the Internet market, news has surfaced that Mozilla's CEO John Lilly will be stepping down from his role, ending his relationship and over two-year role as the maker of the popular Firefox tool. Yahoo News was reporting that Lilly will be leaving Mozilla to become a venture partner at Greylock Partners but will remain on Mozilla's board of directors.
