Green VoIP Manufacturer Recognized for Product InnovationBy Kelly McGuire, TMCnet Editor Sitel Semiconductor, an energy-efficient “green” VoIP processor manufacturer, was recognized as a 2009 Global Enterprise VoIP Semiconductors Green Excellence Award in Product Innovation by industry research firm Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert). According to Frost & Sullivan officials, Sitel’s commitment to deliver low-power, environmentally friendly VoIP and DECT and CAT-iq IC solutions, was a clear indication for why the company was selected. Jayalakshmi Janakiraman, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan said that Sitel’s green VoIP ICs are an exciting addition to the enterprise telephony market, with a proven architecture that lends itself to green efficiency. “This delivers clear benefits for the company’s direct customers and end users alike. System manufacturers can produce products that meet not only current legislation but also more stringent upcoming regulations, Janakiraman said. “SiTel’s green implementation is a unique selling point to attract end-users keen to reduce their cost of operations and carbon footprint.” The company’s systems enable enterprise manufacturers to reduce power consumption by up to 2 Watts per desktop phone, thus reducing the amount of energy utilized for each system. Based on a unique multi-processor architecture, the green VoIP ICs allow chips to deliver performance at lower clock frequencies. Additionally, individual functional blocks can be turned on and off as needed with the system, reducing power consumption for the processors themselves, adding to the green movement. Asmund Tielens, CEO of SiTel Semiconductors, said that, with its potential to reduce phone bills, VoIP is causing a revolution in the telephony market. But what is less often mentioned is the increased power consumption for the end user. “Analysts estimate 40 million VoIP phones will ship in 2011,” Tielens said. “A 2 W power reduction in each of these would give a global power saving of 80 MW – the equivalent of a small power station.” Kelly McGuire is a TMCnet Web editor, covering CRM and workforce technologies, and anchor of its daily TMC Newsroom video broadcast.
