4GWE Conference to Target WiFi, Femtocells in Context of WiMAX, LTE

By Carl Ford, Partner, Crossfire Media

4GWE started out with a look at applications and networks requirements. The applications discussions centered around what it takes to enable applications. At the core of these talks were larger questions about objectives. The service providers want applications that deliver services that promote loyalty, while application developers want to support their customers regardless of networks.

In the battle between LTE and WiMAX, both sides confessed their gratitude to WiFi (News - Alert) in pioneering the technologies of OFDM and MIMO which are at the core of all these alternative technologies.

After talking about the current battles around standards and the development of smart phones and mobile Internet devices at the macro level, 4GWE turns its attention to the relationship of applications, networks and devices.

In the broadband wireless world, achieving ubiquitous reach is important since the network will take advantage of the same IP capability we use with wireline services. That enables the discussion of femtocells as an alternative home delivery method for 4G services and connectivity to strategies for home networking.

Alternatively served by the core of the network, as the devices get smarter they can be self-organizing, which enables ubiquity to be achieved via alternatives paths. These paths need to be supported by a backhaul functionality that is being expanded as we speak.

This ability to deliver persistent services will be used by video strategies that many carriers believe will be the justification to the move to 4G solutions. Their vision will need the support of and ecosystems that matches to the user experience.

User experience requires an understanding of the device development, design enrichment and a preemptive attempt to avoid the security problems that plague the Internet today.

All of these discussions will be taking place during the 4GWE Conference – an event collocated with ITEXPO West 2009, held Sept. 1 to 3 in Los Angeles – over the next two days, with an eye on what is the business model. And Scott Snyder will be looking at the best case worse case of our 4G future with the idea of how you plan for success in a world full of contingency issues.

And we have the added benefit of keynotes from Dr. Mohammad Shakouri from Alvarion (News - Alert) and the WiMAX Forum will be sharing the benefits of the WiMAX certification process and the boom to the industry as a result of the Stimulus.

Sir Terry Matthews (News - Alert), one to the leading entrepreneurs in our industry, will discuss his experience with starting new companies which include wireless companies such as Dragonwave, Benbria, and Telidio.

Ali Tabassi will be expanding that discussion with Clearwire’s (News - Alert) perspective for capitalizing on these new certified devices and the open opportunity to take advantage of the IP wireless broadband marketplace.

Check out our 4GWE Conference agenda, and join us here in the Los Angeles Convention Center.
