Redback Networks (News - Alert), an Ericsson company that specializes in video-centric routers for triple-play networks has informed that its new SmartEdge 1200 router platform has been awarded for technology innovation in content delivery and management with the NXTcomm (News - Alert) Eos award

 

The SmartEdge 1200 is the first of its kind, million-person, subscriber rack for triple-play services like HDTV, HD VoD and broadband mobility. The SmartEdge 1200 platform features three significant enhancements and doubles carrier capacity for new video upgrades while extending triple-play services to broadband mobile networks and bundles up six network applications into a single router.

 

Among new network applications are deep-packet inspection for peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced session border capabilities and network security for carriers and their customers.

 

As our readers will recall, Ericsson acquired Redback Networks Inc. for $2.1 billion in cash back in December.

 

TMC's Greg Galitzine commented on the acquisition, "It appears that Ericsson is positioning itself to better compete with Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel (News - Alert), among others. Redback is an up and coming player in the edge router market, which is being driven by new IP communications applications such as IPTV (News - Alert) and VoIP.
