Nokia Siemens Networks Launches New Optical Networking Platform

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Nokia Siemens Networks has announced a new optical platform – the hiT 7065 – that allows telecoms operators to migrate their existing transport networks to an IP Optimized Transport Solution (IP-OTS) to cope with continuing data growth.

According to a press release, the hiT 7065 offers a full range of connectivity options to meet traffic growth -- while safeguarding existing investments.

In the release, Mikko Lavanti, head of Nokia (News - Alert) Siemens Networks’ Next Generation Metro business line, said the economics of pure IP networks cannot scale without an IP optimized transport solution.

“The new hiT 7065 optimizes existing infrastructure while enabling operators to increase sales with the addition of new data services such as IPTV (News - Alert), Video on Demand or VPNs,” Lavanti added.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ hiT 7065 offers high availability, fast service provisioning and customized services such as bandwidth on demand and multipoint-to-multipoint, say company sources. These qualities make it a future proof investment for new packet-oriented applications supporting existing circuit-based services.

Featuring a compact design, the hiT 7065 sets a new benchmark for energy efficiency, consuming 30 percent less power than comparable solutions. The new optical platform is also a perfect enhancement for the larger model, hiT 7080, in terms of capacity.

The new model also features the industry renowned management software TNMS which depicts them also as one functional unit – a feature that saves on running costs, according to Nokia Siemens (News - Alert) Networks officials.

The hiT 7065 features enhanced connectivity capabilities, so it is most suited for metro and core aggregation deployment. G.709 compliance allows agnostic packet-oriented transport being open to all services such as Gigabit-Ethernet, IP-based applications, Fiber Channel and SDH/Sonet, say officials at Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert).

The new optical networking platform facilitates the integration of every interface type such as OTU interfaces to increase link length towards DWDM core, FC/1GbE/10GbE/ interfaces for Packet aggregation and Storage Area Networks (SAN), to support operators existing services over a single network, according to company sources.

“While SDH interfaces provide the connection to a huge installed base of networks around the world, hiT 7065 also comes with Carrier-grade, redundant Ethernet features to ensure resilience,” officials said in the release.

In a significant recent development, Nokia Siemens Networks recently announced partnership with Telenor (News - Alert) Pakistan to build off-grid sites using solar energy, TMCnet reported. This initiative will enable the operator to cost effectively extend its network to untapped rural areas in Pakistan.

Under this partnership agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its off-grid site solutions that use solar energy to power base station sites in rural and remote areas.
