Level 3 Expands its Offerings in Washington D.C. and other 'Key Markets'

By Patrick Barnard, Senior Web Editor, TMCnet

In order to meet increasing demand from mid-market businesses in the area, Level 3 Communications' Business Markets Group is expanding its operations in the Washington D.C. metro region.

This initiative will give mid-market businesses in the area even greater access to Level 3's voice, Internet and data services. The company continues to expand its portfolio of service offerings and now offers Ethernet, a flexible, scalable technology that provides cost-effective, high-bandwidth access for businesses.

William Ganey, Level 3's Washington D.C. general manager, said although the economy is still struggling on a national and local scale, the local business community in Washington D.C. is “thriving.”

“We believe it is an ideal time to expand and take advantage of business opportunities,” Ganey said in a release. “Level 3 has a rich legacy of serving enterprise customers with a complete range of products and services -- now we are taking our services to the next level to better serve our customers in the D.C. area and provide a competitive alternative for mid-market businesses.”

In addition to expanding its service portfolio, Level 3 will continue to expand its fiber-optic footprint, which already passes more than 20,000 business locations throughout the D.C., northern Virginia and southern Maryland area. Level 3 is also strengthening its sales and support in these areas in order to support new customers.

The news is part and parcel of Level 3’s announcement last week that it was expanding its operations in key local markets including Washington, D.C.; Nashville; Seattle; upstate New York (Buffalo, Syracuse and Rome/Utica); and Colorado (Denver, northern Colorado and Colorado Springs).

In its release last week the company said it had chosen to expand in these markets “because of the business opportunity in each market coupled with the company's unique set of network assets it leverages to serve the local enterprise customers.”

Level 3’s fiber-based communications services serve a wide range of business and government customers.

The company also made news last week when it announced that its network was used to carry the online broadcast of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Specifically, the company provided video backhaul, encoding, caching, streaming as well as storage services, in order to support the online viewing of the live event, which was held on April 15 at Saint Patrick's Cathedral church.
