National Grid Chooses VoIP's Vodafone UK for $7.3 Million Mobile Voice, Data Network

Vodafone UK has been awarded a $7.3 million contract from National Grid to provide mobile voice and mobile data network in the United Kingdom for the next three years.



 
National Grid’s business includes a high voltage electricity system in England and Wales and the company operates the system across Great Britain. It also owns and operates a high-pressure gas transmission system and four gas distribution networks, delivering gas to 11million homes and businesses in England.
 
According to National Grid, Vodafone (News - Alert) was the first choice which demonstrated a robust and resilient mobile voice and mobile data network that meets the high standards required to maintain the organisation’s business continuity strategy.
 
Peter Kelly, Enterprise Director for Vodafone UK, said that the company conducted stringent testing to prove our network capabilities could meet and exceed National Grid’s expectations.
 
“We are pleased that a company that is so essential to the UK’s energy supplies is relying on our network to ensure their workforce is mobile and able to operate, safe in the knowledge that we can connect them reliably to the information they need, wherever they are,” Kelly said.
 
Through Vodafone’s service National Grid can provide embedded SIMs in laptops and telemetry SIMs to its customers to diagnose potential issues within the electricity and gas network and mobile broadband devices ensuring field engineers have connectivity and access to company information at all times.
 
Steve Samways, IS asset and vendor manager, said that having completed a comprehensive tender process, Vodafone proved that they could provide us with a robust voice and data services across the United Kingdom and demonstrated that they understood the importance of reliable communications for National Grid.
 
“We look forward to working with Vodafone for the next three years,” Samways said.
 
Vodafone UK claims to have more than 18.5 million customers offering a wide range of voice and data communications. It provides 3G roaming in 29 countries and offers great roaming value with Vodafone Passport.
 
Recently, Vodafone UK announced the launch of the Vodafone IOU out-of-credit service for pay as you go customers. This will allow users to use their phone even they cannot top up their credit.
