U.S. Cellular Intros Cequint's City ID an Enhanced Caller ID Feature for Mobile Phones

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Cequint’s City ID will be introduced by U.S. Cellular among its mobile phone features. City ID is expected to improve call screening for mobile subscribers as it is an enhanced Caller ID feature capable of displaying the city and state names beneath the number of the wireless call received. This shows from where the incoming calls originate.

Cequint specializes in call screening technologies and its comprehensive portfolio includes patented Caller ID and call screening functions.

City ID is a patented technology which automatically displays the location where the incoming phone number is registered enhancing the number-only Caller ID in wireless. This enables U.S. Cellular (News - Alert) subscribers to identify callers easily and helps them to manage their mobile communications.

Name Caller ID is available to consumers on office and home phones but this facility does not exist in wireless or mobile phones. Subscribers have to rely on number only for identification if it is not a known number in the address book. Number Only Caller ID is less useful to mobile users as the number of area codes is too large nowadays. In the US alone there are 350 area codes and there are also 125,000 unique exchanges under the North American Numbering Plan. This huge volume makes it difficult for mobile customers to try and guess who a caller is.

Cequint’s City ID includes 20,000 specific cities in the U.S and Canada even featuring small towns with just 700 people or lesser also. This level of granularity offered by City ID benefits subscribers as they can identify callers from any where in the state or country.
“Unless someone is saved into the mobile phone’s address book, subscribers only have a number to try and guess who’s calling them,” said Edward Perez, Sr. Director, Product Development and Management. “City ID gives U.S. Cellular subscribers that additional piece of information that helps identify the incoming caller.”

The City ID feature is available since last month on the LG UX585 and Samsung (News - Alert) Delve R800. U.S. Cellular subscribers will be offered a complimentary 15-day trial of the application. Customers can also subscribe to the service as a one-time purchase to be added to their bill directly also.

Subscriber demand for City ID is high as found by an independent market research firm. 95 percent of subscribers said that they wanted City ID in their next mobile phones. City ID also scored as the third most useful feature on a mobile device ahead of email, PTT and even SMS.

Chicago-based United States Cellular Corporation is a full-service wireless carrier which provides a comprehensive range of wireless products and services with good customer support.
