WiMAX Adoption Continues to Grow Despite Weak Economy

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Despite the current economic tsunami that has taken many telecom companies by storm, Mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) is primed and ready for take off. According to a new report from West Technology Research Solutions (WTRS), regulatory conditions are looking bright for Mobile WiMAX industry growth and adoption.

Motivated both by increasing consumer demand for entertainment and communication as well as governmental regulatory and economic incentives, many broadband service providers are creating new technologies and enabling new services that will continue to propel the U.S. broadband market ahead for the next 4-6 years.

"Recent economic uncertainty will affect the consumer market but will not greatly influence the adoption of WiMAX and other emerging wireless technologies in communications sectors," said Kirsten West, principal analyst with WTRS.

"One exception to this is the emergence of WiMAX services targeted at the mobile professional, empowering the connected laptop 'on the go'. This is an application which will likely be negatively impacted by reduced corporate spending due to expense controls that will diminish the roll-out and applications targeting the mobile professional," she added.

The newly updated "Wireless Broadband Technology Trends Report Fall 2008" discusses emerging wireless technologies such as WiMAX, both fixed and mobile, WiBRO, IEEE 802.16m, HSPA, and LTE (News - Alert).

The study analyzes global and regional market trends and forecasts, regulatory issues, standards development, economic effects, and strategic developments. It also offers a comprehensive analysis of the market issues in individual early geographic areas that makes it possible to join other companies that are entering a particular geographic market and will achieve a decent ROI.

It also identifies the winning markets and the drivers and challenges for WiMAX within the wider wireless broadband arena.

Some of the major revelations discovered from the study include:

-- The critical factors driving the development of wireless broadband markets.
-- The development of wired broadband network infrastructure enables and accelerates the deployment of wireless broadband technologies.
-- How regulatory issues affect the growth of wireless broadband networks.
-- How the key features of wired broadband technologies compete directly with wireless broadband technologies.
-- Where WiMAX fits into the wireless broadband sector and which geographies and markets are most likely to lead in WiMAX adoption.
-- The drivers and challenges facing LTE adoption.
