Carrier VoIP Market Reaches $10 Billion: Report

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Synergy Research Group, a company that provides market intelligence to the telecom, mobile and networking industries, recently published market shares of carrier VoIP for the fourth quarter of 2009 and found that the worldwide market for carrier VoIP crossed $10 billion.

However, the market fell 18 percent year over year. Even though the biggest drivers for Carrier VoIP have been migrating TDM PSTN switches to VoIP platforms; in the last 24 months mobile operators pursuing the Capex and OpEx advantages of IP have provided further growth.

Mobile deployments for carrier VoIP have made an impact on market sizes and market players for the VoIP Media Gateway (News - Alert) market. GENBAND's impending acquisition of Nortel's CVAS group is expected to garner a market share position twice that of its nearest competitor. Synergy (News - Alert) has forecasted that IMS will have a strong impact on the carrier VoIP market in the coming years.

In 2009, IMS became a highly viable and transformational service delivery platform for both fixed line and mobile carriers. According to Jeremy Duke, principal analyst and founder, Synergy Research Group, IMS clearly showed its potential in 2009. Duke added that Synergy believes 2010 will show more IMS market development with increased deployments and continued industry cooperation.

Alcatel-Lucent was the No.1 vendor for IMS VoIP subscriber shipments in 2009. In fact, Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) and Ericsson have been the most active vendors in this developing market. More vendors are expected to join in the coming years. Huawei is one such vendor who is rising fast with a gain of 5 market share points for IMS VoIP market share in 2009.

Synergy is also tracking the GGSN/SGSN and PDN equipment markets. According to Synergy, the increase in smartphone usage will lead to a build up of data and video traffic that will force mobile operators to make large investments to contend with the change in traffic. In fact, Synergy is anticipating on more vendor activity as vendors position themselves to take advantage of this network investment.

Synergy's Carrier VoIP Market Share and Forecast research service is a quarterly research program.
