GENBAND, Alcatel-Lucent, and Huawei Lead the Carrier VoIP Market: Report

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

According to the latest findings from Synergy Research Group on Carrier VoIP market, mobile deployments for Carrier VoIP have made a serious impact on market sizes and market players for the VoIP Media Gateway market.

Synergy found that worldwide market for Carrier VoIP totaled just over $10 billion for the full year 2009. The market fell 18 percent year over year, yet significantly less than the drops measured in other Telecom and IT equipment markets.

Migrating the Time Division Multiplexing or “TDM” and Public Switched Telephone Network or “PSTN” to VoIP platforms had been the biggest drivers for Carrier VoIP, the research agency said.

Further growth has been noticed as mobile operators pursued the Capex and OpEx advantages of IP over the past several months as did the Wireline networks before it.
According to Synergy, mobile deployments for Carrier VoIP have redefined the VoIP Media Gateway market.

“Over the last 2 years the changes have been dramatic and change continues with GENBAND's impending acquisition of Nortel's CVAS group,” Synergy noted. “The move by GENBAND will garner a market share position twice that of their nearest competitor.”

In 2009, GENBAND posted about 23 percent of the market share in Wireline and Mobile Media Gateway market, with Huawei (News - Alert) and Nokia-Siemens following with about 15 percent and 13 percent respectively.

IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) or “IMS” is emerging as a highly viable and transformational service delivery platform for both fixed line and mobile carriers. According to Synergy, IMS will have a strong impact on the Carrier VoIP market over the coming years. An example signaling this trend is AT&T's (News - Alert) U-Verse network where they have added over 1 Million IMS VoIP subscribers in the last 12 months, Synergy said.

“Synergy believes 2010 will show more IMS market development with increased deployments and continued industry cooperation such as that seen with the One Voice Initiative,” Jeremy Duke, principal analyst and founder, Synergy Research Group, said in a statement.

In 2009 worldwide IMS VoIP Shipment, Alcatel-Lucent scored the highest with 47 percent with Ericsson (News - Alert) following with a close 32 percent approximately. Synergy expects more vendors to come into the ring in the years ahead. One faster riser continues to be Huawei, who gained 5 market share points for IMS VoIP market share in 2009.

Synergy said that Gateway GPRS support node/ Service GPRS Support Node, also known as the “GGSN/SGSN,” as well as Public Data Network or “PDN” equipment markets also will grow significantly owing to the increased use of smartphones.

“We anticipate seeing more vendor activity here as vendors jockey to position themselves to take advantage of this network investment - as seen with Cisco (News - Alert) acquiring Starent in late 2009,” Synergy researchers added.
