Intersil Intros Dual Port VDSL2 Line Driver

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Intersil Corporation, a provider of high-performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors, reportedly announced the addition of ISL1539A to its family of DSL line drivers for the VDSL2 ultra-high bit rate Internet connectivity standard.

According to Intersil officials, its new ISL1539 is a dual port VDSL2 line driver that provides four internal wideband op amps that are intended to be used as two pairs of differential line drivers. Each internal op amp is a wideband current feedback amplifier providing very high slew rate intrinsic to that design using low quiescent current levels. With the help of external quiescent control logic pins, each of the two pair of amplifiers, also called ports, can be power optimized to the application.

Supporting both the 8MHz and 17MHz VDSL2 profiles, ISL1539A is also compatible with the widely accepted ADSL2+ standard.

In addition, the new offering is a low-power solution in a space-efficient packaging. The overall power adjustment pin facilitates very low quiescent power in less demanding applications. However, full power is nominally 27.2mA/port. These features facilitates in the deployments of densely packed 24-port and 48-port devices. Designers have the choice to select from medium power cutback to 23mA/port, a low power condition at 13.5mA/port, and an off state consuming less than 0.5mA/port.

Officials with Intersil said that ISL1539A features 240MHz bandwidth and greater than 3000V/usec differential slew rate. This ensures satisfactory design margins for the most demanding line interface designs and multitone power ratio, or “MTPR,” targets. It can deliver more than -67dBc MTPR into a 100 ohm line load for the VDSL2 8b profile with wide 240MHz bandwidth and low distortion.

Due to the fact that ISL1539 is intended to be used as differential pairs, the two-port ISL1539A includes special circuitry to minimize common mode loop peaking, and at the same time reduces common mode output noise spectrum.

Available in a compact 24-lead QFN package, ISL1539A prices start at $2.27 each for 1000 pieces.

Intersil’s product portfolio includes ICs for battery management, hot-plug controllers, linear regulators, power sequencers, supervisory ICs, bridge drivers, PWM controllers, switching DC/DC regulators, Zilker Labs Digital Power ICs and power MOSFET drivers; optical storage laser diode drivers; DSL line drivers; D2Audio products; video and high-performance operational amplifiers; high-speed data converters; interface ICs; analog switches and multiplexers; cross-point switches; voice-over-IP devices; and ICs for military, space and radiation-hardened applications.
