Skype Expands Calling Subscriptions Options in U.S. and Canada

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Skype, a provider of online communications, has announced that it is expanding its calling subscription options in the U.S. and Canada.

This year in March, Skype (News - Alert) for the iPhone application was launched and claims that since the launch it has“become the number one downloaded free iPhone (News - Alert) application in more than 40 markets. The company says that downloads surpassed the two million mark in less than ten days.

The addition of Skype subscription provides iPhone and iPod touch users the flexibility to call people who are on regular phones from Wi-Fi zones. In addition, it also allows them to save “significantly” on making calls internationally compared to the rates typically charged on mobile phones, said officials.

“In a tough economy everyone is looking for more ways to save,” said Don Albert, general manager and vice president at Skype Americas, adding that with the launch of Skype’s Unlimited Country subscriptions, company now offers simple, cost effective one country calling options. “Our users can make calls internationally to virtually any regular phone any time of day, without a long-term contract, hidden fees and other restrictions.”

Currently, the subscriptions are available for more 40 destinations. These destinations are Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Columbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guam, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and United Kingdom.

Earlier this month, Skype announced that Skype Credit voucher codes are now available to buy from 72.000 QIWI cash-in kiosks across Russia. In response to demand for a convenient payment option in Russia, this makes Skype's paid-for features accessible to Russian Skype users by providing a convenient way to buy Skype Credit.
