MTS Allstream to Bring VoIP to Canadian City

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Canadian City of New Westminster and the New Westminster Police Service reportedly have awarded contracts to MTS Allstream to provide upgrades for voice and data infrastructure to implement VoIP telephony.

“MTS (News - Alert) Allstream is proud to deliver new technology and unified communications services to these important customers in New Westminster,” said Dean Prevost, president enterprise solutions at MTS Allstream (News - Alert).

Prevost claimed that the company’s VoIP telephony solution securely runs voice and data over a single network infrastructure, and is designed to help organizations of all sizes and in all sectors improve the way they do business.

“This new technology will mean significant cost savings in access line costs as well as remote location extension costs over the next few years,” said Alvin Chok, manager information technology in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Chok said that the new technology would also provide the ability to integrate all remote sites at City Hall, reducing local access charges and multiple site telephony upgrades – meaning that the City’s remote sites will have the same phone features as City Hall through the VoIP technology.

“With MTS Allstream’s IP telephony solutions, we can reduce communications, network management and operational costs by streamlining our network operations,” said Constable Michael Blackstock, telecommunications and support Services, New Westminster Police Service.

Blackstock was of the view that by implementing VoIP telephony, the New Westminster Police Service would be able to reap the benefits that this technology provides.

MTS Allstream is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manitoba Telecom Services
Inc. and is one of Canada’s national communication solutions providers, delivering products and services through the Enterprise Solutions and Consumer Markets divisions.

TMCnet in January reported that MTS Allstream signed a 40-month contract extension with HMV Canada. The contract, according to the companies, extends a previous agreement between the companies, providing HMV with managed multi protocol label switching, Internet, and voice communications; including toll-free and long-distance services.
