Aastra Acquires Ericsson's Enterprise Communications Operations

By Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Concord, Ontario-based Aastra (News - Alert) Technologies has announced that it has completed the acquisition of Ericsson's Enterprise Communication operations in South Africa.

The deal was first announced in February when Ericsson (News - Alert) indirectly said it wants to focus on the service provider space divesting Enterprise Communication operations to Aastra.

Aastra has however not disclosed what it paid for the South African unit of Ericsson.

For Aastra, this move is smart as it gives the company access to sales channels in Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa.

As the world migrates to IP, this channel will certainly help Aastra grow into a major world player.

Analysts believe this move makes Aastra much stronger and also allows Ericsson to focus on its core competency of mobile, IMS and other service provider solutions.

The acquisition, Aastra says, will widen its global reach enabling it to make most of opportunities for growth and development of strategic new channel partners.

Aastra will continue to build on Ericsson's success in South Africa by supporting all existing products and applications, and by providing a high level of customer service.

As the enterprise communication market continues its evolution to VoIP, Aastra believes the acquisition of Ericsson’s Enterprise Communication Business will provide it with the increased scale to be a leading player while creating an important footprint for Aastra in a number of key markets.

Aastra is a provider of business communications solutions for small, medium and large enterprises, and it offers a roadmap for customers to evolve to next-generation IP communications at their own pace.
