AsiaInfo to Develop Billing and CRM for China Telecom Subsidiaries

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

AsiaInfo (News - Alert) Holdings Inc., a provider of telecom software solutions and IT security products and services in China, has announced that it has won a deal with China Telecom, the world’s largest fixed-line telecommunications and broadband service provider.

This deal with AsiaInfo provides that the company will develop billing and CRM systems, the major components of a Business Support System (BSS), for China Telecom’s subsidiaries in Heilongjiang and Henan provinces.

China Telecom will acquire China Unicom’s (News - Alert) CDMA network under the recently announced restructuring for China’s telecommunications industry. To ensure the successful operation of the CDMA network and the smooth migration of existing CDMA users from China Unicom, AsiaInfo will develop a full set of independent billing and CRM solutions for Heilongjiang Telecom and Henan Telecom.

The new billing and CRM systems will be designed to enable the accommodation of mobile, broadband and fixed line operations and are expected to be online at the end of this year.

''We are delighted to win this tender and leverage our world-class telecom software solutions to help China Telecom (News - Alert) to transform from a primarily fixed- line and broadband operator to an integrated telecommunications provider with nationwide services and a diversified product offering,'' said Steve Zhang (News - Alert), AsiaInfo's president and chief executive officer, in a Wednesday statement.

''In the midst of industry's restructuring, we continue to see significant opportunities as three newly integrated service providers ramp up competition on a leveled playing field, increasing the demand for leading software and services.”

“This win further validates our efforts to gain market share among all of China's telecom operators and lays the foundation for future cooperation in promising areas such as value-added services and business intelligence solutions,” Zhang added.

The current activities in the Chinese telecommunications industry at the moment are creating significant opportunities for some, while closing the door to growth and expansion for others. This will be an interesting industry to watch as the country is moving toward more technological innovation, yet still has a foundation deep in cultural tradition.

AsiaInfo provides high-quality telecom software solutions and IT security products and services to some of China’s largest enterprises as well as many small and medium sized companies in China. The company became a prominent supplier of IT security products and services in China with the acquisition of Lenovo’s (News - Alert) non-telecom related IT services business in 2004.
