Mobile Coupons Set to Become The Next Big Thing

By Tracey E. Schelmetic, TMCnet Contributor

If you're a coupon user, you'll know that it's at least a part-time job to find the coupons, clip them and keep track of them. If you've ever wondered, “Wouldn't it be nice to be able to keep all my coupons digitally on my phone?”, then you're not alone. In some cases, you can. Soon, you may be able to do it a lot more often.

According to Juniper Research (News - Alert), mobile coupons are about to become big, BIG business. The analyst group recently published a report called, “Mobile Coupons Update: Ecosystem Analysis & Marketing Channel Strategy 2011-2016”. There report contains information, analysis and forecasts on how mobile coupons are expected to become one of the most valuable forms of mobile marketing over the next five years as well as an important enabler of the whole mobile commerce market. Mobile coupons have even been called by some, “the killer app of mobile,” according to Juniper Research's blog.

Mobile marketing and its associated technology is very hot right now, and several companies are furthering development of channels for the delivery of mobile coupons. These mobile coupons are likely to come via free mobile coupon apps that will offer shoppers discounts off intended purchases.

Add into the mix location-based technologies via GPS, and mobile marketing can target you with coupons wherever you happen to be: near a certain Starbucks, in a supermarket near the soup aisle, for example, or standing on a street corner near a retail clothing store.
